Key Highlights for 2024-2025:

Beginning this year the IRS will allow you to electronically file your tax return even if someone else has already claimed your dependent on another return.  For this to happen, you must have an Identity Protection Personal Identification Number (IP PIN) as the primary taxpayer.  If there is no IP PIN then the return will reject and become a mail in return as it has been in the past.

The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (TCJA) expires at the end of 2025, which will affect individual filers, including: increased income tax rates, lower standard deduction, changes to itemized deductions, and rollback of the child tax credit among other things.  Congress has indicated this will be addressed in 2025 and therefore what will occur is unknown.

In 2025 the gift tax exclusion increases from $18,000 to $19,000 per person. You can gift this amount to as many individuals as you want without triggering a gift tax.

In 2025, Social Security withholding tax applies to the first $176,100 of income, up from $168,600 in 2024. This is the income threshold before deductions are applied for Social Security.  The Social Security withholding rate remains at 6.2% for individuals and 6.2% for the employer.

On December 3rd, 2024 a Federal Judge ruled that the Beneficial Ownership Report (BOI Report) was unconstitutional and granted a preliminary injunction blocking the Department of Treasury from enforcing the Corporate Transparency Act (CTA) beneficial ownership information (BOI) reporting requirements for businesses.
